Federal Government Plans National Policy to Combat School Bullying

The Federal Government plans to introduce a national policy to address bullying in schools, aiming to create a safer educational environment. This was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during a press briefing in Abuja.

Engagement with Federal Unity College Principals

The Ministry of Education recently held its first meeting with principals of Federal Unity Colleges. This session allowed stakeholders to discuss critical educational challenges and propose solutions.

“We met with the principals to emphasize the importance of their roles in shaping children’s futures. Education gives children value, freedom, and opportunities,” said Dr. Alausa.

The discussions focused on improving governance, enforcing discipline, and enhancing educational quality. Dr. Alausa highlighted the shared responsibility of students, teachers, parents, and principals in maintaining school standards.

Strengthening Discipline and Welfare

The meeting also addressed the importance of discipline across the board. Dr. Alausa stressed that discipline is crucial, not just for students but also for educators and parents.

Additionally, the government is prioritizing teacher and student welfare. This includes improving school facilities and creating conducive learning environments nationwide.

Zero Tolerance for Bullying

The government has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on bullying in schools. Dr. Alausa revealed that the Ministry of Education is working with the Attorney General’s office to draft a comprehensive national policy on bullying. This policy will be presented to the National Council of Education for approval.

“We will ensure schools remain safe spaces where students can learn and grow without fear,” he said.

Building on Existing Legal Measures

The new policy will complement existing laws, such as the Safe Schools Act, which already addresses school safety concerns. According to Dr. Alausa, the government is collaborating with state governments to adopt a unified approach.

These combined efforts aim to enforce accountability and ensure that schools maintain discipline effectively.

A Safer Educational Future

The Federal Government is determined to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. By working with stakeholders and strengthening regulations, the government hopes to eliminate bullying and promote respect in schools.
