Tinubu Names Aisha Garba as Executive Secretary of UBEC

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, a seasoned international development expert, as the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). This announcement was made in a statement by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, highlighting Garba’s extensive expertise in education reform and development.

Aisha Garba is a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank, boasting over 24 years of experience in impactful educational programs. She has worked across several countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Her track record includes designing and managing education initiatives, from initial conceptualization to implementation and impact assessment.

During her 15-year tenure at the World Bank, Garba demonstrated expertise in leading transformative education reforms. She developed sustainable solutions by collaborating with governments, development partners, and local communities, ensuring long-term improvements in the education sector.

Contributions to Nigeria’s Education and Global Development Goals

Garba’s previous work includes contributing to Nigeria’s achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in education. She has also consulted for prestigious organizations such as the Department for International Development (DFID), BOND-UK, Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organisation. These roles underscore her commitment to enhancing education as a driver of human and economic development.

Garba is an alumna of Petra American University in Jordan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Computer Studies in 2000. In 2007, she completed a Master’s degree in International Development at the University of Birmingham in the UK, further solidifying her credentials as an expert in global education and development.
